Announcing the launch of our behavioral health workforce survey
The Steinberg Institute is pleased to announce the launch of an important survey for members of California’s behavioral health workforce. As we expand our research and implementation initiatives through Vision 2030, we are committed to generating insights that will improve care for those living with mental health and substance use challenges across the state. A critical part of this effort is understanding and addressing the growing needs of our behavioral health workforce.
Importance of participation
California has the highest number of mental health Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) designations in the nation, highlighting the severe shortage of mental health service providers in many parts of the state. Additionally, the behavioral health workforce does not currently reflect the diversity of California. Through this survey, the Steinberg Institute aims to gather valuable data that will support our work to strengthen the state’s behavioral health workforce, better aligning it with the needs of California’s diverse communities.
Survey focus areas
The survey is designed to illuminate the experience of workers across the behavioral health workforce in California. Key areas of focus include:
- Workplace culture
- Burnout and administrative burdens
- Views on technology and its impact on day-to-day work
- Participation in private insurance and Medi-Cal
- Experiences working in collaborative teams with multiple provider types
Insights from the survey will inform the Steinberg Institute’s effort to foster a broad and inclusive understanding of the behavioral health workforce. Data gathered will culminate in a comprehensive report released in 2025.
The report will summarize our findings and recommend strategies to build and sustain a workforce that is representative of and responsive to the needs of all Californians.
Eligibility and a chance to win
The 20-minute survey is open to all direct care providers in the California behavioral health workforce. This can include but is not limited to: psychiatrists, psychiatric technicians, clinical psychologists, primary care providers, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, school psychologists, professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, community health workers, and peer support specialists.
To express gratitude for participation, one respondent from each provider designation (e.g., psychiatrist, peer support specialist, etc.) will win a $100 Visa gift card. Providers will be entered into this drawing after completing the survey.
The Steinberg Institute’s research team will handle all data with strict confidentiality. In our 2025 report, information will be presented only in aggregate form, ensuring that no personal details are disclosed.
